Malacañang said that if possible, parents should make sure that their children are studying the modules from the Department of Education (DepEd) even during typhoons.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque made the statement following concerns regarding the government's blended learning approach while the country faces Typhoon Quinta.
In his Monday presser, Roque said that the children's education can push through even with the typhoon since the blended learning approach does not solely rely on internet connection.
"Hindi po tayo (We are not) principally internet-based. We are modular," he said.
"Ang importante po ang mga magulang, habang may bagyo, siguraduhin niyo po na kung pupwedeng mag-aral ang mga bata eh pag-aralan yung binigay na modules (What's important is that parents, even if there is a typhoon, are making sure that their kids will study the modules if possible)," he added.
Classes have been suspended in many areas in the Philippines, including Manila, due to Typhoon Quinta which may cause a power outage and loss of internet connectivity.
Online learning
According to Roque, Education Secretary Leonor Briones has ordered school divisions to coordinate with each other and provide the necessary intervention to students amid online learning.
"Kailangan mag-provide din ng psychosocial counseling sa mga estudyante (They need to provide psychosocial counseling to students)," he said.
The Palace official likewise called on the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to monitor the performance of telecommunication companies during the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic and the typhoon.
"Nananawagan tayo sa DICT na i-monitor po ang performance ng ating internet providers (We call on the DICT to monitor the performance of our internet providers)," Roque said.
"Sa ngayon po, tuloy ang learning dahil modular naman po ang pinili nating alternative mode of learning sa panahon ng pandemya (For now, learning will continue because what we chose as an alternative mode during the pandemic is the modular approach)," he added.
