Local authorities in Metro Manila have implemented precautionary measures, including the suspension of classes in all levels, both public and private, as typhoon “Quinta” continues to bring heavy rains over most parts of the country.
The local government units of San Juan, Mandaluyong, and Marikina have suspended classes in all levels, both in public and private schools, on Monday due to the inclement weather.
San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora said he ordered the suspension of classes in preparation for the possible effects of Typhoon "Quinta" such as the disruption of online classes due to loss of electricity and internet connection.
The local government has prepared the San Juan Gym as an evacuation center and set up modular tents for evacuees.
Meanwhile, Mandaluyong Mayor Carmelita said the typhoon will be nearest to the city from 2:00 a.m, to 2:00 p.m. on October 26, citing the latest weather report of the Mandaluyong City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
“This may lead to power interruption and internet connectivity issues which may affect synchronous and asynchronous classes,” Abalos said.
In Marikina City, local authorities were constantly monitoring the level of water in the Marikina River which neared its 15-meter mark due to the heavy rains brought about by the typhoon.
As of 8 a.m. Monday, the Marikina City Rescue 161 reported that the depth of water in the river below the Sto. Niño Bridge rose to 14.6 meters, still within the normal level.
Once the level of water hits the 15-meter mark, the First Alarm will be raised. Residents living near the river are advised to prepare for a possible evacuation in case the water level continues to rise.
The state weather bureau has raised Typhoon Signal No. 2 over Metro Manila.
