SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique (PNA) – Personnel of the of San Remigio municipal government in this province rescued three individuals, who were trapped by floodwaters in the center island of Libunan creek in Purok Durog, Barangay Iguirindon, around noon on Monday.
San Remigio Mayor Margarito Mission, Jr. said the trapped individuals, two men and a woman, failed to immediately leave the area when the water level at the creek started to rise.
“We are able to rescue the three trapped individuals with the 14 remaining others refusing to do so,” he said.
The trapped persons reside on the center island of the creek.
The rescue operation commenced at around 11 p.m. Sunday, October 25, but had to temporarily stop due to strong water current.
The rescue team from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), supervised by the Office of the Mayor, also called off the operation after 14 residents refused to leave.
Mission said they left the residents who opted to remain in the care of the village chief.
Meanwhile, the rescued individuals are now in the municipal evacuation center.
“The LGU is taking care of their food and other needs at the evacuation center in the San Remigio town proper,” the mayor said.
Mission also declared on Monday the suspension of work at the LGU because of the heavy rainfall.
“There is still continuous rainfall which might pose danger to our employees,” he said.
Mission said only personnel of the MDRRMO, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, PNP, BFP, and the mayor’s office were requested to be on duty so they could assist in the rescue operation and respond to any eventuality that may still happen.
