The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday denied that there are “legitimate” calls for the resignation of Secretary Leonor Briones – noting that the sources of these information are “fake”.

DepEd Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Atty. Nepomuceno Malaluan

DepEd Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Atty. Nepomuceno Malaluan, during the “Handang Isip, Handa Bukas” virtual press briefing, said that the calls for the resignation of Briones supposedly oming from DepEd’s ranks are not true.

Upon validation with the concerned local officials, Malaluan denounced the report saying that “thousands of public school teachers” in Pangasinan are urging President Duterte to “sack Briones” due to issues of competence and age, among others.

“This is fake because the sources are supposedly three unnamed district supervisors but when we checked, we were told that no interview took place and no statement issued on this,” Malaluan said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Malaluan was referring to a news article and an editorial published by an English broadsheet on Oct. 19 and Oct. 21, respectively. He maintained the articles were “constructed from fake facts.”

All of division supervisors in Dagupan, Malaluan said, attest that “no interview with any of them took place nor any statement as quoted in the report have been made” – accusing the author for “weaving a story from fake facts.”

Aside from competence, the said article which was supposedly airing the side of teachers, also touched on Briones’ fitness to lead the DepEd because of her age.

Briones, who turned 80 years old last Oct. 16, brushed off the issue saying that “age is unimportant” since many important figures – who contributed much to the society – “were not necessarily teenagers.”

DepEd once again urged the media to be “truthful and accurate” when it comes to reporting. “There’s a bit of unfairness and this is not being acknowledged,” Briones said. “The disadvantage is that the damage has been done but there is no single word of apology,” she ended.
