Quezon towns experience heavy flooding, road collapse

QUEZON- Some towns in Quezon were inundated, while some roads collapsed due to heavy rains caused by Typhoon Pepito on Tuesday, October 20.

Towns affected by floodwaters were Gumaca, Lopez, and Guinayangan where the water overflowed from the rivers and rice fields, and causing floods up to as high as chest-level.

Areas that were most affected by the floods were barangays Mabini, Buensuceso, and Progreso in Gumaca town, apparently caused by waste materials clogging the waterways.

Gumaca Mayor Webster Letargo immediately dispatched heavy equipment from the municipal engineering office to clear the waterways in Barangay Progreso.

Floodwaters also invaded houses in Barangay Buensuceso.

Letargo has already sent relief packs to affected residents.

In Barangay Canda in Lopez town, the main road was also inundated, causing heavy traffic in the area.

In Barangay Rizal Poblacion, residents, who had to leave their houses, had to use boats.

A road in Barangay San Antonio in Guinayangan collapsed, while in Barangay Salakan and Hinabaan, the streets were also flooded.

Mayor Matt Florido of Gen. Luna town reported that a portion of the road in Sitio Omon, Barangay San Isidro also collapsed, but it remained passable to vehicular traffic.

In Barangay Sumulong in Calauag town, water was at chest-deep.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Offices (MDRRMOs) were on alert status, and were on 24-hour duty to monitor the rising water in the rivers.
