Two motorcycle-riding men, who tried to evade a police checkpoint in Makati City, were apprehended with dried marijuana leaves and cannabis-infused gummy candies on Thursday night (October 15).
Captain Judge Rowe Donato, Makati Police Substation 6 commander, identified the suspects as John Michael Patiño, 27, and Richard James Lorenzo, 36. Both are residents of Biñan, Laguna.
As police were conducting a checkpoint for the implementation of curfew in the city, the two suspects, onboard a plateless motorcycle, were spotted travelling along Metropolitan Avenue in Barangay Bel-air, Makati around 11 p.m.
Policemen reportedly flagged them, but instead of obeying, the suspects allegedly sped off.
After a short chase, Donato said his men were able to nab Patiño and Lorenzo.
Both of them were frisked at the police station. Police said they found 500 mg cannabis-infused gummy candies in the pocket of Patiño and a resealable plastic containing marijuana leaves in the pocket of Lorenzo.
According to Donato, the two suspects confessed that they were to deliver the marijuana leaves and cannabis-infused gummy candies to someone in Makati.
“The marijuana leaves and cannabis-infused candies are both illegal in the country. The suspects said the leaves and candies were from Biñan, Laguna,” he said.
“They claimed that they were just delivering, not peddling. According to them, they are being paid P1, 000 to deliver marijuana in Metro Manila. But we do not believe them.”
The captain said he has already coordinated with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), saying he was told by the agency that the suspects they nabbed could be related to the people, who are also involved in peddling marijuana, that they arrested last week in Biñan, Laguna.
Patiño and Lorenzo are now under the custody of the Makati Police.
