The Philippines is vying for five major recognitions in the prestigious World Travel Awards this year.
Established in 1993, the award-giving body is recognized globally as the ultimate hallmark of industry excellence, which rewards and acknowledges the success of all the sectors in the tourism industry.
In its 27th year, the Philippines is nominated as the World’s Leading Beach Destination, as well as the World’s Leading Dive Destination.
The popular Siargao Island is also vying for the World’s Leading Island Destination, while the Spanish citadel Intramuros in Manila is competing for the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction.
The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) also garnered the nomination for the World’s Leading Tourist Board.
Voting for the 2020 World Travel Awards will be open until October 25.
Even at the height of the COVID-19 crisis, the country’s major tourism destinations have been globally recognized by even other travel publishers.
But the DOT and the national government are still prohibiting the entry of international leisure travelers in the country amid the existing health threat.
The tourism department is concentrating first on the revival of the domestic tourism economy, which created regional tourism bubbles to restart the recovery of the industry.
