The Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) has thrown its support behind Marinduque lone district Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, a reliable source told the Manila Bulletin Tuesday morning.

Lakas-CMD is the political party of Majority Leader Martin Romualdez, who acted as Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano’s right-hand man for the past 15 months.

Romualdez, Leyte’s 1st district congressman, serves as president of the party which has a membership of 35 solons in the Lower Chamber.

By itself, this shift in allegiance is expected to give the Velasco camp a clear-cut majority support in 299-member Lower Chamber. A majority is 50 percent of the House membership plus one, meaning 150 solons.

Although 186 congressmen reportedly elected Velasco as Speaker during Monday’s session at Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City, a separate source said that the Marinduque lawmaker’s backers numbered closer to 130 as of that day.

The House members are expected to settle the issue on the Speakership today in a morning session ahead of the 3 p.m. plenary session on the proposed P4.506-trillion national budget.
