The aesthetic lighting project was proposed to the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) in 2015 by Tan when she was still Samar governor, and the Department of Tourism (DOT).

TIEZA allocated P80 million for the project and another P90 million for the boardwalk.

The installation of wirings and cables, and the fabrication of LED lights are ongoing, and the entire project is expected to be completed by November after months of delay due to the pandemic.

"(Coronavirus disease) COVID-19 may have slowed our efforts. But just like our experience during (super yphoon) 'Yolanda', we remain resilient and positive that this too, shall pass. You can now witness the restart of Spark Samar," Tan said.

The lighting of the iconic San Juanico Bridge, once completed, is expected to be a big boost in the tourism industry, and will help address insurgency in Samar province.

"I look forward to the completion of the project, and to that day when we can once again witness and experience our people's warmth and hospitality, our culture and food, and our sites," she said.
