3 teenagers killed, 1 hurt in La Union lightning strike

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Three teenagers were killed, while another was seriously injured, when they were struck by lightning when they went swimming at a beach in Barangay Lingsat here Saturday night, October 10.

San Fernando City Police Chief Lt. Col. Orly Pagaduan identified the fatalities as brothers Ivan and Christian Apayo, aged 18 and 15 years old, respectively; and Rhian de Guzman, 17.

Undergoing treatment at the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC) was their companion, who was only identified as Patrick, 21.

According to Pagaduan, the victims were relatives.

An initial report said the victims decided to go for a swim when a thunderstorm struck at around 6 p.m., Saturday, that brought heavy rainfall.

It was when they were already at the beach when the lightning struck, killing the Apayo siblings and de Guzman instantly. They suffered severe burns.
