Cop collapses during training, dies in Leyte

TACLOBAN City - The Police Regional Office 8 (PRO 8) expresses grief over the untimely demise of a police officer undergoing a Basic Internal Security Operation Course (BISOC) Training in Palo, Leyte last October 3.

Lt. Col. Dionisio Apas Jr., training manager of the Regional Special Training Unit 8 (RSTU-8), identified the casualty as Pat. Daren Kjell Hilves, 29, from Barugo, Leyte, in a report released by PRO 8 on October 6.

He said the victim suddenly collapsed during their Buddy Run, which was part of their training.

He was rushed to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center by personnel of Regional Health Service 8, who were assisting in the activity.

He said Hilves was already in stable condition, but later on expired.

The official said the cause of his death was fatal arrythmia with antecedent cause hyperkalemia cardiac fatal arrhythmia (deadly abnormal heart beat) secondary to abnormally elevated potassium in the blood.

Arrhythmia means abnormal or erratic heart malfunction, reflecting in its abnormal heartbeat.

"We are sad for the untimely death of Pat. Hilves despite the preparations and precautionary measures," Apas said.

The official maintained that the activity was under their program of instruction. All precautionary measures were implemented such as the presence of a medical team, water and hydration stations, marshals, and roving assistant instructors.

He added that the training participants had enough time to rest, stretching exercises, taken a bath, and were ordered to drink a lot of water the night before the buddy run.

"The participants were properly briefed as to the nature of the activity. However, we will continue to enhance the training to prevent the possibility that a similar incident might happen," Apas said.
