Surigao del Sur hit by 4.4-magnitude quake

BUTUAN CITY –  A 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit Surigao del Sur province early Sunday, October 4, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor was recorded at 2:32 a.m.

The epicenter was plotted 79 kilometers (kms) northeast of Bayabas  town, Surigao del Sur province. 

The tremor had a depth of seven kms, Phivolcs said.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin, and it was an aftershock of a magnitude-5.7 earthquake last September 21 in Bayabas, Surigao Del Sur, the state agency said.

The Surigao del Sur provincial disaster risk reduction and management council (PDRRMC) reported no damage or injury.

Meanwhile, a 2.9–magnitude tectonic earthquake was also registered at 4:51 a.m., also on October 4, and its epicenter was traced 75 kms northeast of the same town and province, with a shallow depth of only 4 kms, Phivolcs also said, in its latest bulletin.

No aftershock or tsunami alert was raised by the stage agency and the Surigao del Sur PDRRMC also reported no damage or injury.
