Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said they expect the Department of Education (DepEd) to address the challenges arising from the country’s shift to alternative learning amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The government earlier moved the school opening to October 5 from August 24 to give stakeholders leeway to prepare for the alternative learning system. The blended learning method, such as online and modular and television-based education, will temporarily replace the traditional in-person classes to protect the students from the coronavirus infection.

“We are optimistic with the opening of classes in public schools tomorrow, October 5, as the Department of Education (DepEd) assures the parents and the students that they are ready for the opening of classes in this period of COVID-19 normal,” Roque said in a statement Sunday night.

“The system may not be perfect and there may be issues as we shift to flexible learning, which includes modular learning and supplemented by broadcast and online classes, but we are confident that DepEd would address these challenges,” he said.

Roque also called for the swift passage of the proposed budget of the education department to boost its efforts in adopting  the alternative learning method.

“We ask Congress to expedite the passing of DepEd’s budget, which includes support to these new learning approaches,” he said.

The government’s proposed P4.506 trillion national budget for 2021 is still under deliberation by the two houses of Congress. The education sector will get the biggest slice of the proposed budget with an allocation of P754.4 billion.
