Sen. Binay weighs in on House leadership row

Senator Nancy Binay weighed in on the ongoing House leadership row by asking where she can get “word of honor” on social media.

On Twitter, Binay dropped a clip of an old commercial advertisement highlighting the importance of instilling “word of honor” among the youth.

“San kaya pwede mag order ng Palabra De Honor? Parang ok sya pamigay sa Pasko,” Binay said on the social media app.

The term “word of honor” has become trending amid the current controversy hounding the House of Representatives as Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco fight out the leadership position in the Lower Chamber.

Velasco has repeatedly invoked “palabra de honor” as he insists on the need for Cayetano to honor the “gentleman’s agreement” on the term-sharing deal they entered into and brokered by no less than President Duterte last year.

Under that agreement, Cayetano will serve as House Speaker in the first 15 months of the 18th Congress while Velasco will take over in the remaining months.

Cayetano’s share of term is supposed to end this month, but some lawmakers questioned the timing of the change of leadership primarily because Congress is in the middle of deliberations on the proposed 2021 national budget.

Duterte later on met with Velasco and Cayetano, the latter offering to resign. However, the House voted to reject Cayetano’s offer of resignation.

It can be recalled that Cayetano was among the senators who led an investigation on the alleged overpriced construction of the Makati City parking building which involved Sen. Binay’s father, former Vice President Jejomar Binay.
