BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Southern Visayas filed a criminal case against four crew members of Philippine-registered landing craft, LCT Golden Lotus on Tuesday, following a fatal maritime accident that happened early this month in Escalante City, Negros Occidental.
Charged for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property before the Office of the City Prosecutor in Escalante City were ship Captain Vincent Book, Chief Mate Arnel Martinez, Helmsman Celestino Nuñez Jr, and Lookout Marlon Dangan of LCT Golden Lotus.
According to the incident report released by the PCG on Wednesday, the charges came after the crew members were allegedly involved in the accident that led to the death of a 29-year-old fisherman identified as Je-Ar Caspe.
The PCG sub-station in Escalante City and the PCG District Southern Visayas conducted a thorough investigation on the accident.
On September 8, Caspe and his father went fishing on board separate boats when the vessel allegedly rammed into the victim’s boat in the waters between Molacaboc Island in Sagay City and Pamaaun Reef in Escalante.
His father, who witnessed the incident, searched for his son and found him with a “fractured right arm and missing right leg,” according to the PCG. The victim’s boat was also damaged in the accident.
The victim’s father is seeking justice for the death of his son.
The management of the cargo vessel has not issued a statement as of press time.
