Catholic prelates are opposed to postponing the May, 2022 National and Local elections.
The church leaders believe the COVID-19 pandemic is not enough reason to postpone the upcoming polls.
"No to postponement of 2022 elections. No strong reason to warrant its postponement," Ozamis Archbishop Martin Jumoad said in an interview Sunday.
Archdiocese of Manila apostolic administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo said elections should continue, adding that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) should find a way to continue our democratic process even with the pandemic.
Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos is also against postponing the elections not only because it is against the Constitution, but also so as not to prolong the term of those who did not serve the people well especially during this pandemic.
"We can accept and admit that this Covid19 Pandemic is a judgement call. We can learn many things from this pandemic. We see who really help and serve us without vested interest nor with selfish motives," he said.
"It is not only against the Constitution, but not to exercise our right to vote, we are just prolonging their misconduct and conniving to their misdeeds," added Santos.
Retired Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes agreed with Santos.
"As much as possible, we must follow the rules laid down in the Philippine Constitution! Breaking rules leads to corruption and anarchy!" he said.
Bishop-emeritus of Novaliches Teodoro Bacani also opposed the idea.
Bacani said he is against the idea which he said is being floated to "prepare us for No El."
Pampanga (2nd District) Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo on Thursday proposed to the Comelec to consider the possibility of postponing the May 2022 national and local polls due to the threat of COVID-19.
