Jake Zyrus couldn’t help but express gratitude with a documentary on his life securing a nomination at this year’s International Emmy Awards.

The 28-year-old singer, who first rose to fame as Charice Pempengco, shared that being part of the list is “surreal.”

“Thank you @iemmys – It’s an honor,” he added.

Under the Emmy’s Arts Programming category, “Jake And Charice” will be vying the title along Brazil’s “Refavela 40,” France’s “Vertige De La Chute (Ressaca),” and United Kingdom’s “Why Do We Dance?”

The nominations for the 2020 International Emmy Awards were announced today by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

There are 44 Nominees across 11 categories and 20 countries.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony in New York City, Monday, Nov. 23, details of which will be announced in October.

Note the documentary, produced by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) and co-produced by ABS-CBN, was able to snatch the Gold Camera Award at the US International Film and Video Festival last June, beating four other entries under the social issues category.

“The singer Charice (Pempengco) was the first Asian artist to have a Billboard top-ten hit. Mentored by producer David Foster, she wowed the world with her incomparable talent. Seven years later, she came out as a transgender man, changed her name to Jake Zyrus, and made a fresh start without the renown or voice that he had established as Charice. Why did Charice choose to live as Jake? How did his family and other people dear to him react? NHK documented Jake’s life and new challenges, his joys and sorrows, and the journey he took to finding his own voice. We hope the documentary will be watched by a wide range of viewers including those who are not interested in gender issues,” the synopsis of the docu read as published on the website of the US-based festival.
