DOST develops rating system on recyclability, recovery of End-of-Life vehicles

A rating system designed to quantify the recyclability and recovery of vehicle components such as old jeepneys has been developed by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Pena said that the Recyclability Index of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) was developed under a DOST-PCIEERD funded project "Recycling and Recyclability Index for End-Of-Life Jeepneys” implemented by the University of Asia and the Pacific-School of Social Engineering (UA&PSSE).

It is the first of its kind in the country and supports the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Dismantled components of a jeepney model were computed and can amount to as much as P30,000 without the engine.

To maximize the value of the dismantled parts of the ELV, a preliminary feasibility study was initiated which recommended the establishment of a scrappage facility within and around Greater Metro Manila area that will handle the dismantling process.

The researchers also recommended an alternative approach in building a large scrappage facility by organizing a regional consortium of junk shop owners.

Results of the research project have been shared with the Department of Transportation – Road and Infrastructure Sector working on the PUVMP.
