Another cop succumbs to COVID-19; PNP death toll up to 17

A 28-year-old policeman became the latest fatality of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Philippine National Police (PNP), as the number of infected cops continues to rise.

Tens of thousands of policemen are currently deployed on the streets to man border control checkpoints and enforce the quarantine rules down to the community level.

PNP chief Gen. Camilo Cascolan said most of the infections in the police force are from Metro Manila, considered the epicenter of the virus infection due to high cases of COVID-19.

PNP spokesman Col. Ysmael Yu said the latest fatality was assigned to the National Capital Region Police Office – the 17th police personnel who died of the coronavirus. He died on Thursday.

Currently, the PNP has a total of 5,329 cases, 3,924 of them have already recovered while 1,388 are current active cases.

While the PNP has recorded 74 new recoveries, there were additional 44 cases as of Friday night. Most of the new cases are from the NCRPO, with 27.
