Yay or nay? Kim Kardashian's SKIMS maternity shapewear line

It drops on Sept. 17

It seems mom-of-four is on a roll. Kim Kardashian tweeted on Sept. 12 that her shapewear line SKIMS will be releasing its Maternity Solution wear this week, offering “the best in comfort and support for your changing body during and after pregnancy.” And true to being inclusive, the line will be available in nine colors and sizes XXS to 5X.

To most moms, this is heaven sent. But quite a few had negative reactions to this new venture. British actress Jameela Jamil tweeted her thoughts about it the next day, saying that pregnant women shouldn’t be made to feel self-conscious, and “enjoy the miracle taking place inside their body and not have to worry about feeling embarrassed/shamed that their body is changing for an amazing reason.”

Though she didn’t mention the brand, a lot of netizens were quick to defend Kim’s new line, including celebrity mom Chrissy Teigen who posted about it in her Instagram stories. Seen wearing SKIMS, she says, “We're not idiots. None of us think that this is making us smaller. We do it so we feel high and tight. Honestly, it feels easier to get up, it feels easier to move around when you're not flopping all over the place. It just makes you feel better."

With Twitterverse filled with mixed reactions over Kim’s new maternity shapewear line, the star finally responded on Sept. 14 with five-installment tweets. She started, “To anyone who has an issue with maternity solutionwear, and if you haven’t been pregnant before, you may not know the struggle of what it’s like carrying all of this weight the way I did along with millions of strong women. SKIMS maternity line is not to slim but to support.”

According to Kim, the sheer and thin layered material that covers the belly doesn’t slim the tummy, but only provides support for the lower back. To relieve the pain caused by the swelling on the legs, compression is provided in the leggings. “It is also worn after you have given birth and provides the comfort and support that most women need after delivery, especially if you are recovering from a cesarean,” she explained.

Citing that they launched this because of the many requests they have received, this was also something she thought she needed when she was pregnant. “Based on the majority of positive feedback we have received so far from pregnant women around the world, I am incredibly proud to a solution that will provide comfort and support during the times we all need most, during pregnancy and after.”
