Notorious kidnap gang in Rizal busted


Theirs is supposed to have a story plot similar to Maria Puzo’s ‘The Godfather’.

But the mafia-like ambition of Rodel Basi was abruptly ended when police raided their lair and resulted in his death and that of his eldest son after a brief gunfight in Teresa town of Rizal on Wednesday night.

Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo, director of the Anti-Kidnapping Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the family of Rodel is notoriously known in the province as engaged in kidnapping activities involving Indians engaged in lending business.

“They are currently involved in a series of kidnapping incidents involving Indian nationals, Robbery, gun-for-hire in the area,” said Estomo.

“They are also involved in a series of Murder and Homicide case in the province of Rizal particularly at Teresa. They are known in the area as armed and dangerous,” he added.

AKG spokesman Ronaldo Lumactod said Basi also commands a few members of their gang which he would tap in their illegal activities.

At around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, AKG operatives raided their house in Sitio Ibabaw 2, Barangay Dulongbayan in Teresa town using a search warrant against Rodel Basi.

But Lumactod said Rodel and his two sons engaged the AKG operatives in a gun battle.

The brief gunfight resulted in the death of Basi and his eldest son identified as Romar. His youngest son was also arrested.

Police seized a shotgun, a 9mm pistol and a .45 pistol.
