Cloud cluster east of Mindanao seen to intensify into an LPA

A cloud cluster east of Mindanao will likely form into a low-pressure area (LPA) that could bring rains over parts of the country in the next few days.

According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Benison Estareja, the potential weather disturbance may bring rains initially over Mindanao, then in Visayas and Southern Luzon in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the LPA that was last spotted in the vicinity of Botolan, Zambales early Sunday was already on its way to the West Philippine Sea, leaving the landmass of the country within the next few hours.

This LPA is still less likely to develop into a tropical depression.

As of Sunday morning, the easterlies and localized thunderstorms may bring scattered rain showers over Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms may be felt in Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

PAGASA reminded the public to remain alert against possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorm activity that usually occur in the afternoon or evening.

Dam update

Due to lack of significant rainfall over the Angat Watershed in Bulacan, Metro Manila's main water source, Angat Dam, continues to fall below its 180-minimum operating level Sunday morning.

Based on the PAGASA's monitoring, Angat Dam's water level was at 177.21 meters Sunday, which is 30 centimeters lower than the dam's 177.51-meter level last Saturday.

The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has reduced the raw water allocation of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System to 46 cubic meters per second (cms) in September from 48 cms since May 2020.

But the current water allotment is still within the normal allocation for domestic use at 46 to 48 cms.

The NWRB continues to appeal to the public to avoid wastage and utilize water responsibly.

It had pointed out that if the 15 million Filipinos in Metro Manila conserve at least four liters of water everyday, about 60 million liters of water in a day -- equivalent to 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools can be conserved.

Angat Dam supplies the domestic water requirements of at least 16.5 million consumers in Metro Manila and some parts of Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, and Bulacan; irrigation needs of 28,000 hectares of agricultural land in Bulacan and Pampanga; and hydropower generation from its by-product water releases.
