PLDT-Smart fires up first '5G Media City'

PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) recently powered a live television coverage using 5th generation (5G) technology at the TV5 Media Center, Mandaluyong City.

With 5G available in its studios, TV5's production teams, news anchors and reporters can now use Smart 5G-certified devices for their live coverages and news gathering.

“This is part of our commitment to make the latest technologies, innovations and solutions available to our customers,” remarked Alfredo S. Panlilio, Smart President and CEO and PLDT Chief Revenue Officer.

“Recently, we made Smart 5G commercially available so subscribers can enjoy super-fast data service. Now, we look forward to harnessing 5G to modernize TV5 news operations.”

The 5G technology's flexibility enhances its value, says PLDT chief technology and information advisor Joachim Horn.

“LTE is a one-size-fits-all network. You have one network and you can do many things with it. But because it is one-size-fits-all, it is not very flexible," he elaborated.

On the other hand, “5G is highly customizable, making it particularly interesting for Enterprise customers.”

The  technology can analyze crowd and traffic flows using cameras.  “This capability is relevant in the time of social distancing, to be able to—without physical contact or human interaction—to steer through crowds, avoid crowd build-up, or manage the traffic flow,” he pointed out.
