Lawyers' group urges action against those calling for 'rev gov'

An organization of lawyers on Thursday, Aug. 27, called for action against groups pushing for a revolutionary government.

The Philippine Bar Association, Inc. (PBA) voiced its opposition against the Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte-National Executive Coordinating Committee (MRRD-NECC) group for sowing "subtle seeds meant to erode the Rule of Law and the Constitution."

“It is fitting that the groups calling for a “revolutionary government” received near universal condemnation. But it must not end there. The gathering was just the latest in a series of openly defiant acts that target the duly-constituted government," it said. "While the true principals have yet to show their faces, their method is already clear—to sow subtle seeds meant to erode the Rule of Law and the Constitution."

“We in the PBA will not stand idly by as this happens," the PBA added. "So should every freedom-loving Filipino."

The group warned there is “danger in letting movements like this fester without immediate action” and allowing them “to coagulate and gather.”

Reminding that “revolts do not happen overnight,” the PBA said groups in favor of a revolutionary government “summons its strength over time and creeps on the unwary.”

“The greatest sin we can commit right now is to dismiss or ignore the true dangers these repeated calls for ‘revgov’ pose,” it stressed.

The group also pointed out that the pandemic, coming economic crisis and the nearing end of the presidency have become “an alluring combination for those who desire power above all.”

“We should not allow glamour seeking upstarts to undermine the Constitution and cast the country to another dark era of chaos,” the group declared.
