TACLOBAN City – A retired police officer and his son were shot dead in broad daylight Tuesday, August 25, just a few meters away from the Palo Cathedral and the Palo, Leyte town hall.

The victims were identified as Pio Peñaflor, a retired police officer, and his son, Alphy Peñaflor, 35, both residents of Barangay Mag-Aso, Jaro, Leyte.

Initial investigation disclosed that the victims had just alighted from a public utility bus in front of the Palo Cathedral on San Salvador St., National Highway, Barangay Sta. Cruz, when they were fired upon by still unidentified perpetrators onboard a black sports utility vehicle.

Pio immediately fell to the ground, while Alphy still had the chance to run for cover, but he, too, was gunned down by their assailants. Both of them died on the spot.

The bodies of the victims were brought to a local funeral home, while operatives of Palo Municipal Police Station have launched a follow-up investigation on the motive of the shooting, as well as the identity of the gunmen.
