Jimmy Garalde, 56, of Barangay Ablan in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, was seen waving and calling for help when the crew of MV Unico Stella saw him.  The ship was in the waters off Bangui Bay in Ilocos Norte, the Coast Guard said.

According to the MV Unico Stella, which was manned by 16 Filipinos and four Korean crew, Garalde aired a distress call approximately 200 meters away from the foreign ship.

They immediately launched a rescue mission to help the distressed fishermen and coordinated with Coast Guard Station – La Union for further assistance.

It was later learned that Garalde’s fishing boat capsized due to rough seas and strong winds while on a fishing venture.

A Coast Guard team then arrived to ensure the safe and secure disembarkation of the fisherman and brought him to the nearest shoreline for medical evaluation and management.

Garalde was finally sent back home at around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Coast Guard, the Korean-registered vessel was on its way to Indonesia from China when it encountered the distressed fisherman.
