Price caps on face shields, Vit.C, antibiotics mulled

Price ceiling on face shields, immunity booster vitamins, and antibiotics against COVID-19 may be imposed starting next week by the Department of Health.

Anna Guerrero, DOH chief for Pharma Division said during the radio program “Konsyumer at Iba Pa” that DOH may be issuing the suggested retail price (SRP) on face shields by August 15. The SRP is the retail price range for a product categorized as basic or prime commodity.

“There should be reasonable prices of face shields,” said Guerrero adding that DOH will also require technical standards for face shields. Prices of face shields range from P40, P150, P400 and P500, depending on material used and its uses, but there has been reported increase in prices and tightness in supply.

Trade and Industry Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said that DTI has encouraged the public to improvize  using acetate, plastic bottle as frame. Castelo said there are also DIY videos online on making face shields. Guerrero further said that DOH may also include in the SRP Vitamin C with zinc, multivitamins and antibiotics.
