PNP civilian employee dies of COVID

The death toll in the Philippine National Police (PNP) from the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) rose to 12 after a civilian employee died of infection, police reported on Saturday.

The latest fatality, according to the PNP Health Service, was a 49-year old civilian working at the Finance Service. She died on August 4.

This developed as 27 new cases were reported in the PNP, with the National Capital Region Police (NCRPO) continues to have the most number of infections.

Based on the PNP data, a total of 2,434 personnel have been infected by the coronavirus but more than of these cases have already been recovered.

PNP chief Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa said most of those infected got the virus from frontline duties such as manning the checkpoints and the conduct of law enforcement operations.

But despite the rising number of infections, Gamboa said the PNP will not be affected since the figure is a very small fraction from the total strength of the PNP which is 209,000.
