Ecleo custody issue to be resolved, says PNP

The Philippine National Police National Capital Region Police Office (PNP-NCRPO) said Friday that it is still in talks with the court to determine where former Representative and cult leader Ruben Ecleo Jr. will be transferred after his arrest in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Major General Debold Sinas, NCRPO commander, said Ecleo was temporarily detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City.

"Our legal officers have already coordinated with the court to finalize where he will be turned over," Sinas said.

Ecleo, a former Representative of San Jose, Dinagat Islands and the "supreme leader" of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA), was arrested by intelligence agents on Thursday by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by the Sandiganbayan for three counts of graft and corruption. His driver, Benjie Relacion Fernan, 35, was also caught by the police officers.

The 60-year-old detainee was tagged in the killing of his wife, Alona Bacolod Ecleo, and the latter's kin in 2002, which led to his arrest. He was eventually allowed to post bail.

In 2011, he jumped on his bail and went into hiding. The following year, he was convicted of parricide for Alona's death.

Meanwhile, Sinas said a P2 million-reward will be given to the informant who helped the police in locating Ecleo.

The informant, whose identity was withheld for security reasons, is a native of Dinagat Islands who went to Metro Manila to provide the details of Ecleo's whereabouts.

Four NCRPO personnel will also receive meritorious promotion following the achievement.
