The Plasma Donation Drive at Headquarters 53E, Camp Lapulapu, Cebu City, was led by 53rd EB commander Col. Gerardo Catindoy in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH-7) and the United Architect of the Philippines–Sugbu Chapter.

Studies showed that convalescent plasma, the liquid part of the blood of COVID-19 survivors, may be instrumental in treating COVID-19 patients in critical condition due to the presence of antibodies that can help boost the immune system.

Soldiers of 53EB who were infected with the virus and successfully recovered decided to donate plasma in the hopes of increasing patient recovery and saving more lives, Catindoy said.

He added that since the onset of the pandemic, the Philippine Army was mobilized to support the efforts of the government in defeating the unseen enemy.  Thousands were deployed to man hotspot areas, checkpoints, and even more were involved in the distribution of relief goods.

Catindoy said the soldiers have their own stories about their service and duty during this pandemic and of being infected with the virus.  As soldiers, he said, they know how important blood donations can be in saving lives.

“Rest assured that the Brigade will remain supportive of all the safety measures and thrusts geared towards defeating the COVID-19 pandemic.  Together, we are proud to build and serve. Through our collective efforts, our country will heal and recover as one,” Catindoy added.

Catindoy said the Army is not immune to the disease and are among the most susceptible but he vowed that they will give their best to serve and protect the people.

“As always, we go beyond engineering and construction related projects. Even in the face of a health crisis, the troops will remain steadfast and dedicated to carry out its mission,” he stated.

Catindoy urged fully recovered patients to donate their plasma to help other COVID-19 patients who are battling the disease.
