BUTUAN CITY – A molecular diagnostic laboratory for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is set to rise in the fast-rising province of Agusan del Sur.
The regional office of the Department of Health (DOH) based here on Friday said the establishment of the COVID-19 testing laboratory was finalized after a team from the DOH national office inspected the ongoing ground works in the construction site.
The construction site is located at the Agusan del Sur Provincial Health Office (PHO) compound in Barangay Patin-ay, Prosperidad town.
The DOH central office team was led by Dr. Nestor Bonagua Jr.
The team was accompanied by the top provincial officials of Agusan del Sur led by Gov. Santiago B. Cane Jr. at the PHO compound.
The establishment of COVID-19 laboratory was welcomed by the provincial officials, saying that it was going to be “very vital in their fight against the dreaded COVID-19 disease”.
The laboratory has an estimated budget of more than P17 million.
When completed, it can immediately process specimens using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) machine, it said.
The groundworks of the laboratory began last week, and is expected to be completed before the end of this year, or by October 2020.
The Agusan del Sur COVID-19 laboratory is expected to start its operation by December this year.
The installation of all the necessary equipment and apparatus for the laboratory will take proper and accurate installation after the completion of the building construction.
The new laboratory will be of huge help to the province, considering that swab samples currently need to be brought to laboratories in Davao City which takes more than a week before results could be returned to Agusan del Sur.
