Pregnant women and infants from Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) in Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) have been given maternity powdered milk products by the Department of Science and Technology-Misamis Occidental (DOST) and the Misamis Occidental Provincial Government-Provincial Nutrition Committee.
The products were made available to provide additional protection to the pregnant and lactating women in challenged areas since they have it worse in meeting their basic and essential needs in this time of crisis.
Concepcion town Mayor Jessie Viña tanked DOST-Misamis Occidental Provincial Director Eufresnie Ann Simbajon and staff Joanne Katherine R. Banaag through social media postings.
Fifty-five pregnant women from the municipality of Concepcion were the beneficiaries of the maternity powdered-milk products.
Teresita Lumantas, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer of the municipality, accepted the donation.
A second wave of DOST Region 10 support followed with packs containing cookies and “otap” made from the DOST SETUP-assisted firms. A total of 162 lactating mothers in Concepcion municipality were the recipient of goodies.
The provision of the maternity powdered-milk and SETUP goodies is one way of the DOST-Region 10 COVID-19 response initiative to help the most vulnerable groups, such as pregnant and lactating women cope with the impact of the pandemic.
Through this, the essential pregnancy, lactating needs, and balanced diet needs are being achieved by the beneficiaries of the GIDA community to reduce the risk of micronutrient deficiencies.
