DAVAO CITY–The military today confirmed two explosions in Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Maguindanao province early this morning.
Capt. Arvin Encinas, spokesperson of the military’s 6th Infantry Division said the explosions caused by command-detonated improvised explosive device occurred around 6:30 a.m. and 6:40 a.m. today, January 19, in Barangay Semba, Datu Odin Sinsuat.
Encinas told Manila Bulletin that the blasts targeted military personnel who passed by the road with a distance of one kilometer from the division headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines 6th ID.
Based on their initial investigation, Encinas said the blast could be part of the diversionary tactics of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) targeting military forces. He said the blast happened shortly after an army vehicle passed by the road.
Encinas said the first location of the blast was near a gasoline station, while the second one was only 10 meters away.
BIFF spokesperson Abu Misry Mama confirmed they were responsible for the explosions.
Mama said he received reports that there were soldiers who died but could not give a specific number. However, Encinas said the military has not recorded any casualty from the blasts.
