Pandemic teaches people humility -- Pabillo

Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila Bishop Broderick Pabillo said the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has taught people how to be humble.

"Many people because of a few knowledge, no longer believe in God. They no longer pray. They believe they can do everything and no longer need God," he said in his homily during a mass at the Our Lady of Penafrancia Parish in Manila on Sunday.

With the pandemic, Pabillo said, people are shown how fragile the world is and the systems we are trying to build.

"We thought we know many things. That we can explore the stars, that we can tinker with life, we can amass knowledge with our computers and our artificial intelligence," he said.

"The coronavirus puts us in our place. It humbles us," added Pabillo.

"Because of this small virus everything stopped. We are so afraid of this enemy that we cannot see. Even doctors and experts don't know what this COVID is," he said.

But, Pabillo reminded the faithful that they are not alone as God is always with them.

"We are not alone. He carries our burdens...do we allow Him? Do we trust Him?" he said.

"We are being called by Jesus, let us approach Him and learn from his humility," added Pabillo.

The prelate asked the faithful to always remain humble even after the pandemic.

"We are humbled and we should stay humble if we want to become great," said Pabillo.

He added: "Humility attracts God."
