The Gabriela Women’s Party threw its support behind Frankie Pangilinan, daughter of Sen. Francis Pangilinan and megastar Sharon Cuneta, after she received a rape threat for speaking up against sexual violence.
“No one deserves to be threatened with sexual violence for merely voicing out political beliefs,” Gabriela said.
“Rape is a serious criminal offense, and hence should never be used casually under any circumstance,” the party added.
Frankie, who recently made headlines for speaking out against rape and sexual violence against women, sparked the #HijaAko online movement.
“Independent voices must be allowed to thrive without any fear of being in harm’s way. Stop using rape threats to silence critical voices,” Gabriela said.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will begin a probe on the netizen who allegedly made a rape threat against Frankie.
NBI Cybercrime Division Chief Victor Lorenzo said the netizen who made the threat can be accused of unjust vexation in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act, which has a penalty of six years one day to 12 years in jail.
