Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto has lauded the “heroism” of frontliners amidst the new coronavirus pandemic during the 159th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal.
The mayor, together with Pasig Cong. Roman Romulo and some city officials led the simple wreath-laying ceremony at Plaza Rizal on Friday morning.
In his speech, Sotto acknowledged the acts of heroism of medical workers, law enforcement personnel, and community kitchen volunteers who continue to render their service despite the threat of the virus.
“Ngayong panahon ng pandemya, nakita po natin ang maraming halimbawa ng kabayanihan (In this time of pandemic, we have seen many examples of heroism),” the 31-year-old mayor said.
“Nawa’y mabuhay ang diwa ni Jose Rizal sa ginagawa natin sa ating pang araw-araw na buhay (May the spirit of Jose Rizal live on in what we do in our daily lives),” he said.
Born José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, Rizal was born in Calamba Laguna on June 19, 1861.
Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso led a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Luneta Park.
Formerly known as Bagumbayan, the historic park is where Rizal was executed on December 30, 1896.
