TACLOBAN City – The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Eastern Visayas has tripled since the national government allowed returning residents to travel back to the area last month.

The Department of Health in Region 8 (DOH-8) logged 42 new cases on Friday (June 12), bringing the total number of cases in the region to 132.

This is the highest number of cases recorded in one day since March 23. They will be tagged as Patients EV91 to EV132.

These came from a total of 223 results released by the Eastern Visayas Regional COVID Testing Center, where 179 were negative.

From the 44 positive results, 17 are from Alang-alang town, 11 from Dagami, 1 from Tacloban City, 5 from Bato, 1 each from Hilongos and La Paz towns in Leyte, 2 from Padre Burgos, 1 from Macrohon in Southern Leyte province, 2 from Gandara, Samar; and 1 from Almeria, Biliran.

The other two positive results are re-swabs of Patient EV26 from Tarangnan, Samar, and Patient EV45 from Naval, Biliran.

Eastern Samar is the only province in Region 8 with no COVID-19 cases.

With 17 confirmed cases, Alang-alang, Leyte Mayor Lovelle Yu assured the public that things are under control and strict quarantine protocols are being implemented.

“The public are strongly urged to observe the minimum public health standards and practice the new normal to avoid getting infected by COVID-19,” she said.
