TACLOBAN City – A person, who assaulted a police officer while drinking in public, was killed in Baybay City recently.

The suspect was identified as Samuel Managbanag, alias Dodong, 31 yrs old, married, gym instructor, and a resident of Sto. Niño Village, Zone-1, Baybay City.

Initial investigation disclosed that P/Cpl. Ronel Tapales of Baybay City Police saw a group drinking on the sidewalk, which was a violation of Executive Order No. 58 prohibiting any person from drinking in public places.

Tapales advised them not to drink outside their residences, but the suspect challenged him to a fight which the policeman declined.

The suspect then attacked the police officer, and tried to grab his firearm which prompted him to shoot Managbanag.

Managbanag was brought to Western Leyte Provincial Hospital (WLPH) for medical attention, but was declared dead on-arrival by the attending physician.

An empty shell of caliber .9mm was recovered from the scene.

Tapales voluntarily deposited his issued caliber 9mm Pietro Beretta to Baybay City Police Station for proper disposition.
