CEBU CITY — Two barangay councilors were among those arrested when police raided an illegal cockfight locally known as tigbakay in Barangay Candabong, Dumanjug town, southern Cebu.
Rogelio Mayonila, 38, and Mark Gil Bendanillo, 35, were cornered by police along with a 17-year-old boy.
Police Major Ardioleto Cabagnot, chief of the Dumanjug Police Station, said they rushed to Candabong past 5 p.m. last Thursday after they received a report of an ongoing illegal cockfight.
There were at least 30 persons participating in the cockfight when operatives of the Dumanjug police and 703rd Regional Mobile Force Battalion arrived.
The cockfight aficionado ran to different directions but police were able to corner the two barangay officials and the boy.
Gamefowls and cockfight paraphernalia were also seized.
Cabagnot recalled that two barangay captains in the same town were arrested last March for also participating in a tigbakay.
“Cockfight in this area is very common because there are a lot of gamefowl breeders here. But we have warned them that holding of cockfights is prohibited because of the current enhanced community quarantine,” said Cabagnot.
Aside from violating the quarantine protocols, the two village officials will also be charged for violating Presidential Decree 1602, the law that prohibits illegal gambling.
