Progressive group backs Lopezes

The Lopez family and the ABS-CBN management should fight it out and stand firm on democratic principles and love of country on the issue of the closure of the network.

Progressive group Kilusang Mayo Uno stressed this on Wednesday as it urged them to resist any form of pressure to buck down on the issue of shutting down the ABS-CBN network.

“The workers are furious. The people are enraged with the forced shutdown of ABS-CBN by a Malacañang instigated cease-and-desist order issued by the NTC,” said Elmer Labog, Kilusang Mayo Uno Chairperson.

KMU pointed out that not only did the National Telecommunications Communication (NTC) went ahead of the congressional action on the legislative franchise of ABS-CBN “but its move was clearly prompted by moves of Solicitor-General Jose Calida”.

KMU warned that the senselessness and arbitrariness of the network’s shutdown characterize suppression of free press just like during martial law.

“Tyranny is showing its ugly face. The workers and ordinary people are betting their honor and very lives to fight against this attack. We expect the Lopez family to do nothing less. We urge the Lopez-owned ABS-CBN to show nationalism in this juncture of history. They have endured martial law before and stood on democratic principles against the Marcos dictatorship. We expect the same Lopezes during the time of declared martial law to be as strong now. Walang iwanan!” Labog ended.
