Two soldiers were killed while another one was injured when suspected members of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) attacked troops who were enforcing enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Maguindanao, the military said on Tuesday.
Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Western Mindanao Command, (WestMinCom), said elements of 57th Infantry Battalion were deployed in Barangay Talibadok, Datu Hoffer town when they were fired upon by an undetermined number of BIFF militants.
The incident happened at around 8:55 p.m. last Sunday, May 3.
Sobejana said a 45-minute firefight erupted between the state forces and the enemies.
There were undetermined number of casualties on the BIFF’s side, he said.
The military has been fighting a two-pronged war, one which is against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the other against the enemies of the state including local threat groups.
Sobejana expressed grief on the death of the two soldiers whom he said were “killed in action while performing their duties for the good of humanity.”
“We will make sure that these terrorists, who are obviously desperate to strike back during this time when we are all working to defeat the coronavirus, will pay for their treacherous acts,” Sobejana vowed.
Meanwhile, the injured soldier was immediately extricated and evacuated to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Sobejana said he deployed back up troops to pursue the militants.
