Priests in the Diocese of Balanga in Bataan are being discouraged from celebrating mass in private homes.

Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos said Holy Mass live streamings should only be celebrated inside the parish church, or any chapel inside the parish church.

“There should never be holy mass in any private homes, likewise no holy mass live streaming in any home,” he said in a letter addressed to his clergy.

In a separate interview, Bishop Santos said he issued the directive so as not to create “division and confusion” among the faithful.

“Having private holy Mass even live streaming might create misrepresentation that only spacious or beautiful houses or known family can be allowed or hold private masses,” he said.

“A holy Mass in a private house could lead to division and confusion. ‘Why there? Why not in our house?’ We avoid to be labelled ‘we favor that one’ or ‘we reject that house because of…'” added Santos.

Besides, he said, the proper place of the holy Mass is the church.

“This live streaming is just because of this situation, the right and proper place of the holy mass is the Church. Holy Mass is communal, presence and sacrificial physical gathering.” said Santos.

Bataan is still under the enhanced community quarantine which was implemented by the government to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Since public masses are suspended, priests celebrate mass in private and this is being live streamed for the faithful.
