The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday reported 284 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the nationwide tally to 8,772.

The DOH also reported that the number of patients who have recovered has increased to 1,084 after they recorded 41 new recoveries among COVID-19 patients in the country.

However, 11 more patients have succumbed to the disease, raising the total number of deaths to 579.

Message to healthcare workers

In a related development, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III expressed his gratitude to the medical frontliners for their dedication during the COVID-19 health crisis.

“Bugbog man sa pagod at tila nalulunod sa dami ng kailangan gawin maprotektahan lamang and ating sambayanan, buong puso akong nagpapasalamat sa inyong kabayanihan,” said Duque in his Labor day message.

[Even when you are tired and seem to be drowning in the amount of work that you do in order to protect our people, my heartfelt gratitude for your heroism.]

“Ang inyong Kagawaran ng Kalusugan ay taus-pusong nagpapasalamat sa inyong patuloy na pagsasakripisyo para protektahan ang ating buong bansa at lahat ng mga Pilipino,” he added.

[Your Department of Health is deeply grateful for your continued sacrifice to protect our country and all Filipinos.]

Isolation facilities in jails

The DOH, meanwhile, reported that isolation facilities, for COVID-19 positive detainees with mild and moderate symptoms, were set up in different jails.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has installed a 110-bed capacity quarantine in the medium-security of the New Bilibid Prisons, the DOH said.

“Multi-disciplinary technical support has likewise been supplied to the Correctional Institute for Women as an emergency response to its confirmed cases detected recently,” it said.

The DOH also said that a 48-bed quarantine facility in the Quezon City Jail in Payatas is now operational with 40 admitted detainees.

“Meanwhile, work is ongoing at the New San Fernando District Jail with a 40-bed quarantine facility and the Quezon District Jail in Pagbilao, Lucena City with an 80-bed quarantine facility,” it said.
