The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Wednesday said it is offering online learning series to tourism workers amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
“May mga online learning series kami na you get a certificate after. Dati kasi nagkakaroon kami ng mga training face-to-face siya. Ngayon ginagawa na namin online. Ang kagandahan nito, mas marami kaming participants ngayon,” said Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat in an interview on GMA News’ Unang Hirit.
Puyat said they get at least 1,000 participants per series.
“Kapag mabuo nila ‘yung tatlong ‘yun, they get a certificate. Hindi nasasayang ang kanilang oras habang nasa bahay sila, may natututunan sila lalo na ngayon madami tayong standards ngayon for safety protocols,” she added.
Puyat added this is important in the tourism sector to be prepared for the new normal.
“We’ve already given sa mga private sectors, sa mga hotel accommodations ‘yung proposed safety protocols natin, kasi iba na ngayon,” she said.
The new health and safety standards in the tourism sector includes wearing of masks and gloves, having hand sanitizers, and regular disinfection of the facilities.
Meanwhile, Puyat said most of the hotels in the country are being used as accommodation for health workers, BPO, and bank employees, as well as for returning overseas Filipino workers.
The tourism secretary also clarified that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Department of Finance (DOF) are the lead agencies in giving financial aid to displaced tourism workers.
“Kami sa DOT, ang mandate lang namin with regard to promotion. Ang ginagawa na lang namin, lahat ng participation fees, lahat ng accreditation fees libre na lahat ngayon. At least libre yan ngayon lahat for the hotels.”
