BACOLOD CITY – First there was Covid Marie. Now comes John Covid as the practice of naming newborn babies after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continued.

And this time, it was a baby boy, the second son of a police officer and a teacher from La Carlota City in Negros Occidental, who was named after the cause of the ongoing crisis.

John Covid Castillon is the second son of Patrolman Jose Roquero Castillon Jr., 29, and Jemima Montalvo Castillon, 36, a part-time teacher at the La Carlota City College.

The baby, weighing 3.1 kilograms, was born on April 8 at the Valladolid District Hospital.

A baby girl, who was born in Bacolod City, was earlier reported to have been named Covid Marie by her parents.

Patrolman Castillon is assigned at Police Station 6 here, and has been deployed to a check-up point at Bangga Cory in Barangay Mansilingan lately.

As one of the frontliners in the fight against COVID-19, Castillon said that he chose to give his son the name John Covid because "John" meant God was gracious and merciful, and he thanked the Lord for keeping them safe and their baby from COVID-19.

Castillon said that he is currently on a paternity leave to spend time with his baby, and we will be back to work on Thursday.
