Sixty-three persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in Cebu City Jail have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total to 207, as reported by Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella on his Facebook page.
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) spokesperson Chief Inspector Xavier Solda said on Saturday (April 25) that the “best way to know the real situation in Cebu City Jail is only through the conduct of tests.”
In an interview, Solda said the BJMP is taking the direction of the ongoing joint efforts among BJMP personnel, Department of Health (DOH) Region VII, and the Cebu City local government.
On orders of BJMP chief Director Allan Iral, Solda said the bureau will provide more focused medical care to the COVID-19-positive PDLs and jail personnel who are now in isolation.
He said the BJMP has maintained the strict implementation of health protocols “to protect our facility from the further spread of the virus.”
BJMP Region 7 has already ordered the isolation of the infected individuals in a separate building within the compound, while requesting the court to temporarily stop the committal of inmates to its jail facilities.
