Municipal employee, cop survive ambush in Masbate

CAMP OLA, Albay – A police officer and a municipal employee employee were ambushed and wounded after coming from a Social Amelioration Program (SAP) distribution in Monreal town in Masbate province reportedly survived an ambush on Friday afternoon.

Police Major Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5) spokesperson identified the victims as police personnel Romel Bartolay, who is assigned at the Monreal Municipal Police Station, and Ricky Canares, an employee of the Monreal local government.

Initial investigation disclosed that while the victims were onboard a motorcycle and about to return to the town’s police station when they were fired upon by unidentified suspects upon reaching the boundary of Barangays Real and Rizal in Monreal town.
They had just come from providing security assistance to Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Monreal personnel who distributed SAP benefits.
Calubaquib said that Canares sustained gunshot wounds in the back, while Bartolay sustained gunshot wounds in the left portion of his head and back.

Both victims were brought to Rural Health Unit for medical treatment.

Pursuit operations for their assailants were still ongoing as of press time
