The Department of Transportation (DOTr) expressed gratitude on Thursday to 2GO Group, Inc. after it publicly announced waiving rental fees for the two vessels that were mobilized as quarantine facilities.

2Go Chairman of the board Dennis Uy said on Wednesday that the transportation department has offered to pay the company a P35 million rental fee for the two vessels for a two month term, however, the company intended to offer the use of the ships as donation to the government.

“This is a most welcome development, and this magnanimity of Mr. Dennis Uy and 2Go all the more reinforces the BAYANIHAN spirit that prevails in this monumental effort of both government and the private sector to fight the COVID-19 pandemic,” DOTr said in a statement.

The department clarified that there is no time that DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade talked and discussed the matter with Chairman Uy, “as negotiations were made through the proper channels.”

“It is therefore unfortunate and deplorable that Mr Dennis Uy was unfairly dragged by media and was at the receiving end of negative commentaries, when he was never part of the discussion, and was not even mentioned by Secretary Tugade in his interview,” DOTR said.

DOTr added, “this is truly the essence of BAYANIHAN as we jointly commit to help heal our nation.”
