COVID-19 cases in QC now 1,062; city gov't opens additional testing centers, implements other measures

From the previous 1,042, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Quezon City (QC) has surged to 1,062 as of 7 p.m. of April 20, based on a Department of Health (DOH) report.

The DOH figure is 350 more than the 712 tally of validated cases by the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (QCESU) and District Health Offices in the same time frame.

In the same period, the Quezon City Health Department (QCHD) reported 903 confirmed cases with complete addresses in Quezon City, up by 41 from the previous 862.

The same OCHD report revealed that the number of active COVID-19 cases in the locality -- referring to those who are still alive and have not fully recovered -- stood at 526.

As of 7 p.m. of April 20, there were four reported new deaths, raising the death tally to 94, while five new recoveries were reported, bringing its total to 92.

Extreme enhanced community quarantine (EECQ)

Mayor Joy Belmonte reiterated that the city government imposes the EECQ on barangays with two or more confirmed COVID-19 cases and in other streets and/or in congested urban poor areas where fast transmission is most likely to occur.

However, Belmonte stressed this will still be subjected to daily review depending on the number of cases/recoveries.

She noted the newly reported barangays with two cases have not yet been included in the list as they are still undergoing validation.

As of 7 p.m. of April 20, 2020, the Quezon City government has implemented EECQ in the following barangays:

Tandang Sora, Kalusugan, Ramon Magsaysay, Maharlika, Tatalon, Batasan Hills, Pasong Tamo, Central, San Roque, Paligsahan, Bagong Lipunan ng Crame, South Triangle, Culiat, Bahay Toro, E. Rodriguez, San Isidro Labrador, Matandang Balara, Teachers Village West, Manresa, Paltok, Sto. Domingo, Bagong Silangan, Holy Spirit, Payatas, Marilag, Socorro, Kamuning, Pinyahan, San Isidro Galas, Commonwealth, Pansol, North Fairview, Novaliches Proper and New Era.

Hope 1 facility

As of April 20, 2020, Hope 1, a temporary quarantine facility, has reached its maximum capacity of confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients.

Hope 2 facility

As of April 20, Hope 2 facility has a total of 215 rooms/beds, with 141 of them occupied by confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients. At present 74 beds remain available for the use of COVID-19 patients. Those who have been tested at the city’s community-based testing centers are brought here for self-isolation while waiting for their results.

Quezon City community-based testing service

On April 20, a total of 198 swab tests were conducted in the city’s community-based testing centers, local government hospitals, and by the QCESU.

Of the 198 tests, 36 were done in Quezon City General Hospital, 27 in Rosario Maclang Bautista General Hospital, 15 at the Quezon Memorial Circle, 33 in SB Park Novaliches, 40 at the Asian Institute of Tourism, and 47 were conducted by the QCESU.

Belmonte said those who wish to be tested for COVID-19 should go to their barangay health centers where preliminary interviews and evaluation will be conducted prior to the scheduling in the testing areas.

The city government opened additional testing centers in Districts 5 & 6, located in SB Park Novaliches and Asian Institute of Tourism, respectively, aside from the Quezon Memorial Circle for District 4 which opened a week prior.

'Kalingang Quezon City (QC)’' report

As of April 20, more than 33,100  pedicab, tricycle, jeepney, AUV, taxi and TNVS drivers, market vendors, and solo parents have benefited from the financial assistance from the “Kalingang QC’’ program. The city government has provided cash aid to those whose livelihoods have been adversely affected by the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

As of 5 p.m. of  April 20, law enforcement authorities have arrested 144  residents for violating ECQ protocols.

Social Amelioration Program (SAP) 

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), in partnership with the city government, has started distributing cash aid to local residents through the social amelioration program (SAP).

Belmonte said Barangay Mangga, one of the pilot barangays to benefit from SAP, has completed the distribution of the financial assistance to 213 qualified recipients.

She invites residents to email the city government through [email protected] for questions or other concerns regarding the program.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in public markets

High-precision CCTV cameras will be installed in public market areas beginning this week to ensure that social distancing is strictly followed and to protect the public from lawless elements.

These will be placed in Commonwealth Market, Datu Tahil Market, Gatmaitan Market, Litex Market, Susano Market, Nova Plaza Market, Novaliches Market, Susano Arcade, Francisco Talipapa, and Bagbag Market.

Also covered by the CCTVs are Cloverleaf Market, Riverview 1, Riverview 2, Pilson, MC Market, and North Diversion Market.

Q-Mart market, Tandang Sora Bayan Palengke, Visayas Market, and Tandang Sora Livelihood Coop will also be monitored.
