ILOILO CITY – A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed, while seven others were captured, in a clash with the Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion (61 IB) in Miag-ao town, Iloilo province on Saturday, April 18.
Lt. Col. Joel Benedict Batara, 61 IB commander, said the clash occurred late morning of April 18 in Barangay Cabalaunan after the government forces went to check on information provided by civilians that an NPA platoon was in the area conducting training of new recruits.
The encounter lasted 35 minutes before the NPAs, numbering about 40, went on a retreat.
The insurgents left behind a dead comrade. Among those who were captured was a 14-year-old boy.
“NPA rebels are taking advantage of the current crisis and conducted massive recruitment and training even among minors,” said Batara.
The government troops also recovered an M1 Garand rifle, a KG9 sub-machine gun, a .45 caliber pistol, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), medical paraphernalia, and subversive documents at the encounter site.
